LAGUNA HILLS, CA, January 28, 1992 -- Network Software Associates, Inc.
(NSA) today announced new version of PrintSpool, a software product that
is available as an option with any of the company's PC-DOS based
communications software products to provide minicomputer-like print
spooling and job management control functionality for PC-to-host printing
applications.
The new PrintSpool now includes an enhanced video display driver library
providing full-screen 132 column viewing of files on the following video
boards: IBM CGA, EGA, VGA and 8514; Ahead VGA and Wizard; Compaq VGA;
Genoa Super EGA HiRes; Hercules Mono; Paradise VGA Plus; Tseng EVA/480;
and Video Seven VEGA Deluxe.
PrintSpool is designed for applications requiring printing of very large
files downloaded from a mainframe. It allows such downloaded files to be
temporarily stored on the PC's disk, a process known as "spooling". The
PC's disk is able to accept the files at a much higher rate than the
attached printer(s), thereby reducing data communications line costs and
host connect charges.
The files stored on disk can be printed concurrently while additional data
is being received or can be printed later after the host communications
session has ended.
"PrintSpool brings to power of a mainframe or minicomputer spooling program
down to the PC level," said Kelly Williams, NSA's marketing communications
manager. "It's an extremely powerful memory-resident program".
PrintSpool's design is based on the capabilities of IBM's mainframe
spooler, called the Systems Data Display and Spool Facility (SDSF).
PrintSpool provides Function Management Header 2 (FMH2) support analogous
to that provided by SDSF.
PrintSpool offers an array of advanced spooling capabilities, including
support of three simultaneous printers, foreground and background mode
with hot-key, unattended operation, naming and prioritization of print
jobs, multiple copy printing, forms alignment, user-configurable buffer
sizes, interrupt or noninterrupt printing, printing in 1K increments, and
the creation of spool files in DOS format.
PrintSpool supports most printer types, including character printers, laser
printers, and even high-speed line printers up to 2,000 lines per minute
(lpm) which are typically only supported by large mainframes or
superminis.
PrintSpool is priced at $295 The enhanced version is available for
immediate delivery.
